Why? I didn’t go to school to be a marketer…

“Why do I have to learn about marketing?” – my initial thoughts when I began to learn about inbound marketing for my internship at Hüify.  I know, whiney right?  I mean, I went to school for web design & development I figured I’d hire my own marketer and I could just handle the pretty stuff.  I am not cut out to be a marketer, I tolerate people, which means I don’t want to talk to them; I’m like my dad.  My mom is the one who says “he’s kill looking for joy” and sometimes that is true.  I’m not that bad but I do try to avoid my fair share of local festivals and nonsense gatherings downtown.

So let me clear things up right now..  I went through the classes to further my education in inbound marketing so I could be apart of the internship.  As I took notes and listened to the videos I began to see the big picture and little pictures of why inbound marketing is important.  It’s so important to every business (I’ll say something deeper later.)  I realized that my view of marketing was muddied before and I this was my image of a marketer:

  • Knocks on your door
  • A lot
  • Gets in your face
  • Guilt trips you into buying whatever they’re selling
  • Doesn’t go away

OR

  • Calls you
  • A lot
  • Keeps calling
  • Annoyingly rehearsed speeches without breathing
  • Guilt trips you if you try to say “no thanks”

Of course this applies to some marketers, but not all of them.  These classes taught me that inbound marketing is caring for your customers even if they’re just a website visitor.  I’m going to define Inbound Marketing before I go on:

This definition is pulled from fellow squire Laurene Rapoza‘s blog, you can find that blog article here

”  Inbound marketing is advertising a company through blogs, podcasts, video, eBooks, e-newsletters, white-papers, SEO (Search Engine Optimization), social media marketing, and other forms of content marketing. Inbound marketing earns the attention of customers, makes the company easy to be found, and draws customers to the website by producing interesting content.  “

I was very surprised by how much social media feeds into potential customers interest into your company.  During the classes I was bombarded with ideas of what to do for my own future business and things I need to suggest to my parents own businesses.  With the information I learned I feel confident that I will create beautiful content with customer personas in mind.  Hüify’s blog also has an interesting article on social media presence, read it here !

It is so important to attract attention, get the visitor to fill out a form/sign up for emails and convert them into leads.  Once they are leads (receiving company newsletter emails, following your company on social media, etc) you’ll work towards closing them into buying customers and keeping them happy.  I don’t want to give away all the details so lets just say that I was educated, impressed, and changed.

My overall view of a marketer has changed for the better.  I understand now on a deeper level how to optimize my future company’s success online.

Needless to say that I passed the test at the end of the class and I am prepared to optimize each project with the knowledge I acquired!  The internship at Hüify will be an amazing experience I’m sure, I’m excited to get started, they are far more seasoned in blogging and inbound marketing so if you’re up to it, read more at their blog here.

Squires, Seasons, and Battle Shields

I would like to take a post and talk about my excitement for my time at Hüify for the next 3 months!  I do believe that I’m finally finishing up all initiation phases and I cannot wait to dive into designing!  I’m apart of a great team, just look at us squires!  I’m looking forward to working together for common project goals and candy eating.

I know everyone has their own “favorite season” and you can submit your opinion (you are entitled to one or two 😉 )  later on.  Mine, however, is fall sliding into winter.  Why?  I’m glad you asked… First and foremost, there are several holidays in those seasons that bring people in all settings together (work and family.) There’s always awesome songs and new renditions of old songs.  PRESENTS (giving of course… and receiving.)  Do I need to drag fashion into it?  Boots, scarves, long sleeves, tights, hats, sweaters, coats, gloves, mittens, socks, flannel everything.. okay, tangent over..

Any-who, I was getting to my point, my season choice inspires more design from me somehow.  For instance (mini-tangent) I don’t know if you can, but I can smell snow in the air before it happens (my boyfriend thinks its weird) and that creates beautiful art work in my head just waiting to happen.  I hope to incorporate the same inspiration into any project I work on with Hüify in these next three months.

Lastly, while I was reading through the handbook that has nice interesting facts about Hüify I was instructed to draw up a medieval shield that has 4 icons that depict four things why I love about working for Hüify.  I’ve done just that and I will explain further…

Battle Shield

Battle Shield

  1. I love working with Hüify because I get to gain experience in working with a team, intense deadlines, customer satisfaction (instead of teacher satisfaction during school) and of course swordplay experience.
  2. I’ll be working with a team and I can’t stress enough how excited I am for that!  The graphic I drew is actually based off of my church’s graphic for guest services/host team.  It took me a while to realize that it’s actually three people standing in a circle together.
  3. By working with Hüify I am working towards securing a solid job when I’m finished with this program.  I am blessed that I get to gain that experience as well as enjoy my time and work.
  4. I love that I will have an active work environment to put my skills to use and apply them for a common goal.  I will be working with a team to complete a project together for customers, I wont be working on my own for a grade (which I’m sick of.)

Take a gander at the awesome Hüify website and you’ll see why I’m so pumped to get started!

It has begun… dun dun dun…

31 days of blogging has begun on this first day of October, 2013.  I hope to grow my writing skills and design layout strategies in this month.  I have a list of potential projects and posts that I am aspiring to do.  I am excited to get started!

On that note, it is beautiful weather here on the east coast of North Carolina and it has reminded me of the time when I was on vacation in Australia.  The weather was similar to the cool breeze and warm sun we are having today.  This post is about the wild birds I miss the most.  Here, in North Carolina, we commonly see seagulls, pigeons and grackles and while Australia has their version of those birds I miss these the most:

Yellow-Crested Cockatoos:

Both these birds are everywhere!  It was difficult to get used to seeing them all over the place!  By the way, the Cockatoos are beautiful but there “call” sounds like a baby pterodactyl that was unleashed.

There will be more about Australia later!  These photos are mine,  in the future I will credit ones that are not mine.

Thanks for reading!
